Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®: What’s the Difference? 

 At Truth Medical Aesthetics, we offer four FDA-approved wrinkle relaxers to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. While they all work by temporarily relaxing facial muscles, there are slight differences in how they perform.

Jeuveau®

Jeuveau® (FDA Approved 2019 by Evolus) – Often called “Newtox,” Jeuveau is a newer option specifically designed for Cosmetic-Only Use. Unlike Botox, which has medical and cosmetic indications, Jeuveau is only FDA-approved for aesthetic purposes. Jeuveau provides a smooth, natural result that works well to soften lines and slow the prevention of deep wrinkles. Faster onset than Botox, and a last up to 3 to 4 months, but some patients experience closer to four months with consistent use.

Xeomin®

Xeomin® Approved by the US FDA for the treatment of adults with cervical dystonia or blepharospasm and Moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. A “naked” neurotoxin, meaning it has no added proteins. This may reduce the risk of resistance over time, making it a great option for long-term users. Longer onset (4-7 days) and lasts 3-4 months. May have slightly shorter duration in some individuals.

Dysport®

Dysport® (FDA Approved 2009 by Ipsen/Galderma) – Diffuses more quickly than Botox, making it ideal for larger areas like the forehead. It may provide a slightly softer, more natural look. Results last 3 to 4 months, with some study suggesting slightly longer duration closer, four months in certain patients

Botox®

Botox® (FDA Approved 2002 by Allergan Aesthetics (AbbVie) – The most well-known neurotoxin. Its approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines and also has medical use approves for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), severe migraines and other spasticity problems in the face and body.   Onset 3-5 days , duration 3-4 months.

  • BOTOX®

    • Benefits: Effective for treating all areas, especially smaller ones (e.g., crow’s feet). Well-known and widely studied
    • Onset: 3-5 days
    • Results: 3-4 months
    • Average Units: 20 for forehead treatment
    • Considerations: In rare cases, some patients may develop resistance due to antibody formation, though this is uncommon.

  • DYSPORT®

    • Benefits: Faster onset and better for larger areas like the forehead due to increased diffusion. Useful for last-minute treatments. 
    • Onset: 24-72 hours
    • Results: 3-4 months
    • Average Units: Requires 2.5 units of Dysport per 1 unit of Botox (e.g., 50 Dysport units ≈ 20 Botox units for the forehead)
    • Considerations: More diffusion means it may not be ideal for small, precise areas. Not suitable for patients with an allergy to lactose or cow’s milk protein.

  • XEOMIN®

    • Benefits: A “naked” neurotoxin (lacks extra proteins found in Botox/Dysport), which may reduce the likelihood of developing resistance.
    • Onset: 3–4 days (sometimes listed as 5–7 days)
    • Results: 3-4 months
    • Average Units: 20 units for forehead treatment
    • Considerations: Slightly longer onset time compared to other options

  • JEUVEAU®

    • Benefits: Designed specifically for cosmetic use (unlike Botox, which has medical uses as well). Sometimes referred to as “Newtox.” May have a faster onset than Botox. Our personal favorite. 
    • Onset: 2-3 days
    • Results: 3-4 months
    • Average Units: 20 units for forehead treatment 
    • Considerations: Less brand recognition than Botox, but clinically proven to be just as effective.
